Want to create a piece of art that looks way more impressive and complicated than it is to actually knit?
The Sunshine and Shade Cowl is just the thing.
I’m so excited to welcome back Jessica Ays of Double the Stitches!
Jessica and I first collaborated on her Efflorescence Cowl and now she’s back with another gorgeous design: The Sunshine and Shade Cowl. This is the perfect knit for these transitional weather days.
Each kit includes:
- A download code for the pattern
- 1 – 100g skein of naturally dyed yarn
- 1 – 100g skein of undyed yarn
It might look a little complicated, but only one strand of yarn is used at a time. And, if you’re at all familiar with Jessica’s work, she creates STELLAR video tutorials. She’s totally got your back.
Here’s what Jessica has to say about her brand new pattern:
“The Sunshine and Shadow Cowl combines varying width stripes in stockinette stitch and textured mosaic stitches worked in garter stitch. The title Sunshine and Shadow is a nod to the mosaic design worked first with the light color as contrast and then reversing the colors so it becomes the background. The stripes remind me of beautiful tall trees backlit by the sunshine. The width of the stripes is as random and varied as the size of trees in a forest along one of my favorite hiking trails. The design also echoes the difficulties we have all faced due to the current pandemic, and the hope for a brighter future with alight at the end of the tunnel.
I designed this cowl as a skill-building pattern for the confident advanced beginner looking to expand their skills or an interesting project for an intermediate knitter. The geometric design is created with mosaic knitting – a way to create a colorwork pattern while holding only one yarn at at time, just knitting/purling and slipping stitches.”
As always, every skein purchased plants a tree through One Tree Planted AND $1 is donated to Harmony Farm Animal Sanctuary in Sisters, Oregon. Donations are made on the first Monday of the month. See Our Values for the most up-to-date information.

–> This yarn is farm-fresh. It arrives full of vegetation leftover from the sheep’s shenanigans out in their field. I pick out as much as I can by hand, but there will likely be some leftover bits that I’ve missed. Just consider these extra love from the sheep! Baaaa…
–> Every effort will be made to package your order in an environmentally-friendly way using recycled and/or reused materials.
***Hand wash cool***
Great care was taken to ensure dye was set properly. However, it is normal for natural dye matter to continue to rinse for the first few washes.
